How Copra Moisture Affects Oil Yield — And Why Buyers Should Care

Moisture is the cheapest number to fake and the most expensive one to get wrong. It affects what you pay per tonne of actual oil, and whether your container arrives clean.

Copra is dried coconut meat. Its whole purpose is to hold oil — typically around 63 to 65 percent on a dry basis — and to survive the journey to the mill without spoiling. Moisture works against both.

The three things moisture costs you

1. You pay ocean freight on water

The arithmetic is unglamorous and it is the one buyers feel first. At 10 percent moisture instead of 6, roughly one tonne in twenty-five of your shipment is water you have bought, insured and shipped across an ocean. It yields nothing at the press.

This is why a cheaper price per tonne at higher moisture is often the more expensive purchase. The number that matters is price per tonne of recoverable oil, not price per tonne of copra.

2. Mould, and what comes with it

This is the serious one. Above roughly 6 to 7 percent moisture, copra becomes hospitable to mould — and a sealed container crossing the equator is close to a perfect incubator. Day and night temperature swings drive condensation onto the container roof, which drips back onto the cargo.

Mould does not just look bad. Some moulds that colonise poorly dried copra can produce aflatoxin, which matters enormously if the resulting copra meal is destined for animal feed — aflatoxin limits in feed are regulated in most importing markets. A container rejected on aflatoxin is not a discount negotiation; it is a total loss with disposal costs attached.

3. Free fatty acid climbs

Moisture plus time plus warmth encourages hydrolysis, and free fatty acid rises. High FFA means more refining loss, more caustic, more cost at your end. Copra that leaves the origin at acceptable FFA can arrive above specification if it was never dried properly in the first place.

Treat these as the shape of a normal specification, not as a promise. Every batch should ship against its own certificate of analysis.

Why drying method matters

Sun drying is cheap and works well — until it rains. In a wet week, copra that is half dried and then rewetted is worse than copra that was never dried at all: the surface hardens, moisture stays trapped inside, and the mould starts where you cannot see it.

Kiln finishing exists to solve exactly that problem. It costs fuel and it costs labour, and it is the reason two suppliers can quote the same moisture figure and deliver very different cargo. Ask how the copra was dried, not only what the final number was.

What to ask before you contract

  • Moisture at loading, tested how? Oven method or a handheld meter? They do not always agree.
  • Sun dried, kiln dried, or both? And what happens in the rainy season.
  • How is it stored between drying and stuffing? Copra can pick moisture back up in a humid warehouse.
  • Photos of the actual stuffing. Not a stock photo of a clean warehouse — your container, being loaded.
